The leading saxophone quartet made up of Andrés Gomis, Ángel Soria, Alberto Chaves and Josetxo Silguero premiered “Viæ” on 11 May 2023 in Vienna. The composition was commissioned by the Suena Festival for its 2023 edition and has the support of Stadt Wien Kultur.
“Viæ” is rooted in the memory as a saxophonist of its creator. It arises from the review of a period marked by close contact with the instrument and its distinctive repertoire —stimuli that forge the composer’s “musical mother tongue” in a lasting way—, as well as the unforeseeable ramifications that such time generates.
Structured in an episodic manner, the composition “tells” a journey through various “sonic stages” —past, recent, or imagined—, evoking them in a blurred and kaleidoscopic way, as “afflicted by myopia and cinematography”.
Within that “dialectic of the resonance”, the saxophone quartet looks at itself in the mirror, walks into far-fetched times and examines the —alleged— roots which allow to continue walking further paths.
The piece was presented at the Studio Molière in Vienna as part of a programme that also featured works by Georgina Derbez, Helga Arias, Miguel Farias, Inés Badalo and Alberto Posadas.
